2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Transition Comes After Lukewarm Response

The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster early showing last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a more defined game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement mirrors a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.

Here is the full content from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I know you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to endure.”

Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game testing phase was informative. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the requirement for a clearer brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the input to heart and revamped the title with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to fulfill its ambition to our audience.

Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of 31st Union. Following a period of talks, he comes aboard us on the specified date.

His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming space is vast, having spent the recent years producing and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in welcoming him soon. We are all excited to keep witnessing the development of the game in the months to follow.

The President

Experience of the Incoming Head

Game Details and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. At the time, the developers presented the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling evolution on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch states. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, risks, and obstacles that shift every round. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, put it on the line, and hope your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."

Project Ethos lacks an confirmed launch window or platforms, but players can look forward to further news as production continues.
