Courtroom illustration Legal proceedings
The accused admitted 17 criminal counts at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week

A person who spiked candy with sleeping medication and distributed them to youngsters at a youth camp in Leicestershire has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two young males who were nine and ten years old.

The defendant was taken into custody after eight minors and a grown-up fell ill at the facility in the summer month.

The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges when he stood at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he disputed one of the sexual offences he was accused of, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

The accused was held in detention ahead of a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, outlined the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She said his victims were disadvantaged youngsters who were attending a youth camp which he operated.

Ruben engaged in a "sweet game" with the children, Mrs Prior said, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She stated to the judge Ruben had conducted this practice with the children "for many years", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She explained the defendant had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the youngsters being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had concerns in recently.

The prosecutor stated further: "This year his stepchild had concerns about the situation, with valid cause.

"They chose" to have a look in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel explained items including lubricant, Vaseline and injection devices were located, and his stepson notified the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She said the defendant went on to play the "candy game" with six boys that night - July 26th - and they were all sick the next day.

"Authorities" had not arrived by that stage," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, had stated that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

Mrs Prior explained the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson called the authorities once more.

She stated Ruben then played the "sweet game" in a room of five minors.
