Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; authorities are presently not aware of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.
A senior representative commented the incident left him speechless and had to be solved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in 2020.
