Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
